Searchlight New Mexico is a non-partisan, nonprofit news organization dedicated to investigative reporting and innovative data journalism.

In a landscape of shrinking media resources, our mission is to focus high-impact journalism on topics of local, regional and national interest in order to allow the public to see into the remote recesses of government and to expose abuses of power.

We believe great reporting empowers people to demand honest, effective public policy and to seek appropriate remedies.

Support local solutions.

Support independent investigative journalism.

Searchlight New Mexico, nonpartisan and nonprofit, is a free voice among sources of news. With your help, Searchlight’s investigative reporting activates communities so that activism moves policymakers and wise policy leads to real change for our state.

Searchlight does not follow the conventional business model for newspapers. It does not sell advertisements or subscriptions, instead, Searchlight New Mexico is supported by generous donations from readers like you. By contributing to Searchlight, you can support its mission and ensure that it continues to shine light on the issues that impact New Mexicans most.

From Nov. 1 through Dec. 31,  every dollar donated to Searchlight earns another dollar from NewsMatch. NewsMatch will match up to $1,000 for each individual donation.

What is NewsMatch?

NewsMatch is a national campaign to strengthen nonprofit news organizations like Searchlight New Mexico. This November and December, you have an opportunity to transform Searchlight and contribute to the communities we serve. NewsMatch, a national matching campaign that drives donations to newsrooms across the country, designates Searchlight as a deserving partner.

What does nonprofit news mean?

Nonprofit news appeals to many readers who see journalism as a civic responsibility rather than a for-profit opportunity. As a nonprofit, Searchlight New Mexico earns the highest rating for transparency in fundraising, governance and programming. Guidestar, a leading evaluator of nonprofits, awarded Searchlight a Platinum rating.

How does NewsMatch work?

Searchlight is issuing an appeal for donor support. Every dollar Searchlight raises from November 1 through December 31 will earn a match from a consortium of national foundations.

Who supports NewsMatch nationally?

The national consortium includes the John and James L. Knight Foundation, the Democracy Fund, the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation, the Jonathan Logan Family Foundation, Dirk and Natasha Ziff, The Present Progressive Fund, and the Facebook Journalism Project.

Where will the money go?

NewsMatch supports local investigative reporting by Searchlight New Mexico, your independent news source. While this match is a catalyst that will help inspire donations from our readers, it’s only part of the costs associated with deep research and fact-checking. It is a wise community investment indeed to support stories based on data, hard-won public records and expert testimony.

What’s the purpose?

Your support gives community members and local guardians of democracy what they need – deeply examined, urgently needed, clearly written local news. When we let loose investigative reporters to dig for the truth and 45 news outlets to blanket the state with vital facts, the result is a narrative so powerful and deeply researched that it activates readers.

How can I measure the impact of news?

The facts show that investigative reporting drives progress. In recent months alone, Searchlight has achieved resounding results. The 2019 Legislature created an early-childhood department. The state’s top guardian of children is enacting rules to stop over-medicating children. The state environmental agency sued the Air Force over chemical plumes originating on New Mexico bases. Authorities launched investigations that closed one of the largest foster care agencies, whose mismanagement exposed children to abuse. Each action began with a Searchlight exposé.

What is the need?

As trusted information providers, America's nonprofit journalism organizations, including Searchlight New Mexico, play an essential role in providing news that local communities rely on to stay informed, make decisions and participate in civic life. In the wake of the digital disruption of news and declining trust in the media and tech platforms, there is an urgent need to support local and state news to ensure the nonprofit journalism sector can fulfill its democratic mission.
